SUPPORTING the change towards equality

JESS PHILLIPS MP

For too long the gender pay-gap has gone un-actioned. The gender-pay gap must be made unlawful under the Equality Act. Only then will employers ensure women are treated as equal to men in the workplace.

WES STREETING MP

The Equality Act was a landmark piece of legislation designed to safeguard and positively promote rights of everyone. It is time for a proper review of what has worked and where the law can be improved.

Equality is a fundamental value of our society. Our communities thrive if the Equality Acts protects them adequately."

1 in 4 people are thought to experience mental health problems each year. It can be the cause for many to be discriminated at work. It is therefore time to review the equality act 2010 to include mental health as a protected characteristic.

Islamophobia is growing at an unprecedented rate. We need to strengthen the equality act to ensure discrimination against Muslims is unlawful.

The equality act must be reviewed more frequently to ensure it meets the changing society we live in.

LYN BROWN MP

I was the Government Whip for the Equality Act. I'm proud of what we've achieved, but we have so much further to go. The campaign for an Equality Act Review is an exciting opportunity to renew the Act, explore how to include class inequality, and look at how inequalities interact as well.

Dr. Suriyah Bi's report exploring British Muslim women's experiences of work and career development is hugely insightful and informative.  Important research like this will help us to influence policy which will allow greater opportunities for British Muslim women to achieve their full potential, whether it is in the workplace or education. I look forward to hearing about the positive impact this report makes.

The Equality Act was a landmark piece of legislation and I am proud to have served in the Labour government that delivered it in 2010 under Gordon Brown. The Equality Act Review campaign’s work therefore is important in ensuring we use this landmark legislation to ensure everyone, everywhere, is protected from discrimination under the law.

The Equality Act was historic in transforming anti-discrimination from a rhetorical commitment into a legal requirement. As we look to move forward, we need to build on the progress we’ve achieved by dedicating more of our energy into fighting discrimination as a structural force

The Equality Act must be rigorously reviewed and reaffirmed until society should no longer require a designated affirmative act to tackle structural discrimination. By updating the Equality Act we can also make it one day obsolete.

The Equality Act is a hugely important piece of legislation that helps protects people’s rights. It is essential that the act is reviewed to ensure it remains a vital tool to safeguard the future rights of everyone in the UK, remove discrimination and promote equality.
